From naming a new president to record-breaking freshman enrollment and earning the prestigious Seal of Excelencia, 2022 proved to be a year of progress and achievement for Texas State University. Here is a collection of some of the most impactful stories of the year from the TXST newsroom.

Kelly Damphousse named president of Texas State University

Kelly Damphousse became Texas State’s 10th president in July. One of his first acts was to establish commissions, task forces and a work group to examine key focus areas to accelerate Texas State’s forward momentum: Commission on Student Success; Commission on the Run to R1; Round Rock Campus Work Group; Recruitment Task Force; and Administrative Burdens Task Force.

Other key positions filled in university leadership included Gigi Secuban as the first Vice President for Institutional Inclusive Excellence; Brooks Hull  named Vice President for University Advancement; Shreek Mandayam selected as Texas State’s chief research officer to lead the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs; and Matthew Carmichael as new chief of police for Texas State UPD.

Texas State sets record for freshman enrollment for fall 2022

Texas State announced a record-setting freshman enrollment of more than 7,590 for the 2022 fall semester, a 14% increase over the previous year. The largest freshman class in Texas State history is more than 900 students greater than the 6,625-member freshman class of 2021—the previous record holder for class size.


NEXT IS NOW moves closer to capital campaign goal

The NEXT IS NOW campaign surpassed the $200 million mark toward the ultimate goal of $250 million, the largest fundraising campaign in university history. Publicly launched on October 8, 2021, the campaign advances initiatives focused on student success and advancing from a Carnegie R2 designated university to an R1.

Texas State earns prestigious Seal of Excelencia certification

Excelencia in Education, the nation’s premier authority on efforts accelerating Latino student success in higher education, announced Sept. 30 that Texas State has been certified with the prestigious Seal of Excelencia in 2022 for demonstrating through data, evidence-based practices and leadership, how it is intentionally serving Latino students.


Kinne named new head coach of Texas State football

The architect of the nation's top offense in 2022, G.J. Kinne was named the new head coach of Texas State football. The 21st head coach in program history, Kinne will take over the Bobcats after constructing a conference champion, a top-10 nationally ranked team and FCS playoff participant at the University of the Incarnate Word.

Top national and world rankings

Texas State was ranked in the top 6.3% out of 19,788 universities worldwide in the 2021-22 edition of the “Global 2000 List by the Center for World University Rankings” published by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), and was named one of the “Best 388 Colleges” by the Princeton Review for the fourth consecutive year.

In addition, Texas State was named one of the top universities in the nation for producing the most high-earning female graduates by the website Steppingblocks.com. Surveying female alumni under 40 earning more than $100,000 annually, Steppingblocks ranked Texas State No. 6 among R2 Universities in the South, with an average salary of $126,225 for female alumni.

Wittliff Collections acquires Stevie Ray Vaughan music archive

The Wittliff Collections acquired a significant archive of the late, legendary blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan. The SRV archive, obtained from a private collector, is a major addition to the Texas Music Collection at The Wittliff, which already boasts archives from Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Marcia Ball, Cindy Walker and Asleep at the Wheel.


McCoy College of Business announces plans for transformative Student Success Center

The McCoy College of Business announced the creation of a new Student Success Center aimed at accelerating the preparation of business students for academic and career success, as well as a lifetime of leadership and achievement.


Texas State selected by Amazon as an education partner for Career Choice Program

Texas State was chosen as an education partner for Amazon’s Career Choice program in January, providing Amazon’s hourly employees access to bachelor's degrees. Amazon’s Career Choice program is an education benefit that empowers employees to learn new skills for career success at Amazon or elsewhere. The program meets individual learners where they are on their education journey through a variety of education and upskilling opportunities.

Texas State awarded more than $21 million by congressional appropriations bill

Texas State was awarded more than $21 million by congress in support of The Meadows Center, Community Health and Economic Resiliency Research Center for Excellence, STEM for All Partnership and Research, Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center and a study of invasive species populations in Texas waterways.


College of Health Professions marks 50th anniversary

Fifty years ago, the College of Health Professions started with three staff members, an annual budget of $30,000, and an enrollment of 24 students. Since 1972, the college has provided foundational knowledge for thousands of Bobcats who have earned degrees in clinical laboratory science, communication disorders, health administration, health information management, nursing, physical therapy, radiation therapy and respiratory care.

CIEDAR Smart Cities Lab dedication hosted at STAR Park

The Connected Infrastructure for Education, Demonstration and Applied Research (CIEDAR) consortium at Texas State hosted a dedication of the CIEDAR Smart Cities Lab on Sept. 9 at the Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Park. A new solar powered street lighting system enabled with 5G Wide Area Network installed at the site was turned on during the event.
