Texas State University is centering its Black History Month celebrations around powerful conversations, vibrant cultural events, and meaningful moments of reflection and joy. From Feb. 1-28, the community will come together to honor and highlight the rich past, present and future of Black excellence.
MLK Walk and Celebration
Leading up to the month’s festivities, the Dunbar Heritage Association will host the 24th Annual MLK Walk and Celebration on Jan. 19. The day will commence at 9:30 a.m. with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Crossroads Memorial, located at the intersection of LBJ Drive and MLK Drive. Following this, a silent walk to Hays County Courthouse Square will take place from the same intersection.
"63 Years of TXST Black History" Exhibit
This year also marks a significant milestone: 63 years since a federal judge mandated the admission of Black students to TXST, then known as Southwest Texas State College, in response to a class-action lawsuit. To commemorate this momentous occasion, the art exhibit “63 Years of TXST Black History” will open on February 1. This inspiring exhibit will showcase significant pieces that celebrate the Black history of Texas State, alongside creative works by talented students from the School of Art and Design. The exhibit will be displayed on the 3rd floor of Alkek Library. The exhibit will run through Feb. 28.
"Black Voices and Vision" Event
On Feb. 3, TXST will host “Black Voices and Vision,” an evening celebrating Black history through spoken word, poetry and music. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. at George’s and the LBJ Amphitheater, welcoming all to participate in the celebration.
"Tunes at Noon"
The festivities will continue on Feb. 17 with “Tunes at Noon,” where students can enjoy an eclectic mix of soul, funk and rhythmic freestyle by DFOY from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at George’s and the LBJ Amphitheater.
Black History Month Cookout
The Black History Month Cookout, a fun and delicious event to celebrate the community’s accomplishments, will wrap up the month. Enjoy a variety of catered dishes from Chartwells across several locations, including the LBJ Student Center, Bobcat Trail and Commons Dining Hall. The cookout will take place on Feb. 26 from 5 to 7:30 p.m., featuring music by DJ Aarooo, games, live performances and brief remarks.
