The G. R. White Trust has renewed its commitment to Texas State University’s Mathworks by providing a $29,647 award to support 10 scholarships for its summer math camps. These include the Junior Summer Math Camp, Residential Junior Summer Math Camp and Honors Summer Math Camp with a focus on students from rural communities in Texas.

The award will also fund two in-service teachers and four TXST undergraduate students as Mathworks Fellows to participate in professional development during the Junior Summer Math Camp.

"Campers often tell us that Mathworks programs have increased their confidence in what they can do with mathematics and connected them with a community of kids who love thinking about math,” said Cody Patterson, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics. “The G. R. White Charitable Trust has been an amazing partner in helping Mathworks provide these experiences for students from across Texas who otherwise would not have access to intensive mathematics enrichment."

The award will help Mathworks fulfill its mission of providing excellent summer mathematics programs for students regardless of their family financial resources.

Savanna Rocha, a student who participated in the Honors Summer Math Camp last year, would not have been able to attend without a scholarship from G. R. White Trust. Through the camp, she took courses in abstract algebra and real analysis and worked on a research project with mentor Young Ju Lee, Ph.D., professor of mathematics.

“I believe camp has made me more of a critical thinker and has given me more drive to improve as I’m surrounded by the most accomplished people,” Rocha said. “I have been attempting to start a Mu Alpha Theta club at my school and a huge influence for that is HSMC, because I was given the opportunity to learn higher math that is typically gatekept from lower income communities and I want to help break that barrier.”

Recruiting is ongoing for the summer 2026 math camps. Visit the Mathworks webpage for more information on the application process.

Mathworks at TXST is a center of excellence and innovation in mathematics—created to research and develop model programs and self-sustaining learning communities that engage K-12 students in doing mathematics at a high level. Their goal is to prepare students, undergraduate pre-service teachers, and in-service teachers from all backgrounds for success in learning, teaching and doing mathematics.

The G. R. White Trust, established by Brady, Texas, rancher and banker George Rollie White, provides funding annually for college scholarships as well as for innovative programs in healthcare, agriculture, and natural resources management. The G.R. White Trust has been a valued supporter of Mathworks since 2022.
