Dear Campus Community,
We are working to mitigate the impacts of the Canvas outage that affected our campuses and thousands of institutions across the country. Canvas is currently back online, and exams and assessments are continuing as scheduled. I know this disruption has caused significant anxiety and inconvenience, particularly given the timing. The guidance below is provided to support our community and the success of our students and faculty members as we finish the semester.
Guidance for Students
- Follow Faculty Instructions: Exams, assessments, assignments and alternative assessments will continue as planned or as directed by your instructor.
- Alternative Communication: Please monitor your university email for direct communication from your instructors regarding assignments, exams, or alternative submissions in case of additional Canvas outages.
- Deadlines: Faculty members are working to make reasonable accommodations for deadlines that fall during this disruption and are impacted by Canvas access.
- Security: While initial reports indicate no evidence of compromised passwords, please remain vigilant regarding potential phishing attempts. If you are suspicious about any possible phishing attempts, please contact ITAC.
Guidance for Faculty
- Prioritize Student Success: Please recognize that students may not have had access to course texts, study materials, and other important documents housed in Canvas during the disruption. This will impact their ability to prepare for exams and complete some assessments.
- Remain Flexible: It is possible that Canvas will be disrupted again. Please remain flexible and in communication with students if additional outages occur.
- Contact Lists: Student rosters for classes are available online and can be used with your Outlook email to stay in contact with students in case of future outages: https://tim.txstate.edu/classroster
- Keep Students Informed: If you need to make changes to any aspect of your final exam or assessments, please notify students as soon as possible.
- Maintaining and Uploading Grades: Please download your current gradebooks from Canvas to avoid losing access should additional disruptions occur. Grades can be uploaded directly to TXST Self-Service and instructions can be found online: https://docs.gato.txst.edu/240082/Posting-Grades-in-SSB.pdf
We are continuing to monitor this situation closely and will share additional information if the situation changes. Thank you for your patience and resilience.
Sincerely,
Pranesh Aswath

Instructure/Canvas has confirmed they have experienced a data breach and Texas State Information Technology is working with Instructure to determine if Texas State data may be affected. Instructure has identified the following data points as potentially being exposed:
- Name
- Email address
- ID number
- Canvas Messages
The Information Security Office is monitoring the situation closely. While you do not need to change your password or take any action at this time, we recommend remaining vigilant against suspicious emails or phishing attempts.
We will update campus as more information becomes available.
