Six concrete industry management students from Texas State University traveled to the World of Concrete 2023 Convention in Las Vegas to learn and compete in one of the largest concrete industry trade shows in the world.

The students participated in concrete and construction-related courses and seminars at the convention, competed for scholarships, and helped to educate attendees on what it means to get a degree in Concrete Industry Management from Texas State.

World of Concrete invites students from Texas State University and four other universities in the U.S. to the Weatherton Award Presentation Competition. The student who is judged to have the best presentation wins the Weatherton Award which includes a $2,500 scholarship.

Joseph Grout, a freshman in the TXST CIM program, won runner-up in the Weatherton Award Competition and was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Each of the competitors presented on how their CIM major research, internships, or capstone coursework has enhanced their educational and career objectives.

Joseph’s presentation took an interesting approach. Although he’s a freshman, Joseph returned to college to pursue a second bachelors after earning his first degree in animation and working in the industry for several years. He drew from that experience and discussed his thought process for choosing CIM as a major, highlighting the career opportunities and scholarship opportunities the program provides.

This summer, Joseph will join the Space Scholar Internship program as an undergraduate student researcher. The program in Albuquerque, New Mexico is led by Dr. Anthony Torres, associate professor in the TXST Dept. of Engineering Technology.

Students were accompanied by Dr. Jim Wilde, chair of the Department of Engineering Technology, and Ryan Penlerick, program director and professor of practice for the Concrete Industry Management program. President Kelly Damphousse and Provost Dr. Gene Bourgeois were also in attendance.

The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program at Texas State is a bachelor’s degree that prepares students for a wide variety of careers in the concrete and construction industries.  Students in the program have opportunities to travel to events and trade shows, participate in student competitions, and meet industry professionals who mentor and coach them in the pursuit of their career aspirations.

Texas State is one of only five universities in the country to provide a concrete industry management (CIM) degree.

TXST CIM has over $250,000 in annual scholarship opportunities available.

The program boasts 100% job placement and some of the highest starting salaries for graduates of any major on campus.
