Bobcat Break is an opportunity for Texas State University students to enjoy spring break, travel, and volunteer their services.
This year’s Bobcat Break included 28 students participants, six student trip facilitators, and one staff member from Student Involvement who hit the road March 12-16 for Louisiana.
Texas State partnered with Camp Hope, a local nonprofit group whose mission is to, “serve the volunteers dedicated to serving the communities of Greater New Orleans. Our community is defined not by a creed or what we think. Instead, our mission is to be defined by what we do and how we live.”
Volunteers were divided into three teams around the city with the majority helping with renovations at the Nunez Community College library where they replaced shelves and organized books.
"I learned many things over the course of Bobcat Break. When it comes to serving a community, even if you think the task is small, the impact is felt far and wide,” said Lacey Parker, student facilitator, senior, majoring in Aquatic Biology/Business Management. “I understand my values better now because it showed me that my values are not rigid, they’re ambiguous — in the best way. They may not always show up in the same way, given the circumstances, and I think that’s made me adore them so much more.
“I grew as a leader and allowed others to do the same by stepping back and letting others step forward. I can say it was actually one of the best experiences I’ve had in my leadership development so far," Parker said.
"The best takes away from the experience was building new relationships with my peers and impacting a community with our deeds,” said Kyndall Casey, freshman, majoring in nursing.
