Fraternity & Sorority Life Community serves San Marcos area

Delta Sigma Theta sorority members cleaned up downtown San Marcos during FSL Philanthropy Week.

Texas State’s Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) Community joined efforts to raise money for the San Marcos School Fuel program, donated canned food items to the Hays County Food Bank, and cleaned up the downtown area of San Marcos.

The events took place Oct. 18-22 during the annual FSL Philanthropy Week, hosted by the FSL Programming Board. Members from Texas State sororities and fraternities hosted a carnival on the San Marcos campus to collect non-perishable goods and raised more than $1,000 for the San Marcos School Fuel Program. The program helps provide nutritious food on weekends and holidays to school children in San Marcos who are on free or reduced lunch plans.

The week continued with a profit-share event at Torchy’s Tacos, a kickball tournament, and a live music concert in the LBJ Center Amphitheater for the Tunes at Noon series.  

The National Pan-Hellenic Council celebrated across the San Marcos Campus with a Study with the Greeks program, a Wear Your Letters Day, and a Hump Day with more than 300 students enjoying the celebration.

The Interfraternity Council also kicked off their annual Canned Food Drive event for the Hays County Food Bank, which continues through the Thanksgiving break. Canned goods can be dropped off at the Hay’s County Food Bank. This year’s goal is to hit a least 6,000 pounds of canned food items, in hopes of beating the previous donation total of 5,000 pounds of food.

Over 250 fraternity and sorority members participated in “Downtown Blitz,” a community service event organized by Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and the city of San Marcos. Volunteers for this beautification project completed a variety of projects organized by the city to improve the look and experience of the downtown area.
