The Department of Respiratory Care at Texas State University is offering a specialized spirometry training course geared towards respiratory therapists, nurses, occupational health workers, and other medical professionals.
Approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the 2-day training features interactive small groups, hands-on activities, and informative lectures to equip participants with the skills to administer lung function testing in occupational and clinical settings.
The training is directed by Kevin Collins, Ph.D., RRT, RPFT, AE-C, Associate Professor in the Department of Respiratory Care, who spent over two decades in hospital pulmonary labs conducting diagnostic testing.
“My passion for the past 18 years, as a respiratory therapy faculty, has been teaching the pulmonary function testing course to respiratory care students,” says Collins. “Participants in the NIOSH spirometry course will learn how to obtain accurate, valid, and reproducible test results which is essential for detecting, monitoring, and preventing lung disease.”
Individuals who pass the written and practical exams in the course will receive a 5-year NIOSH certificate, allowing them to conduct spirometry testing in clinics.
Multiple training sessions are open for registration for Fall 2025 and Spring 2026. Training dates and registration links can be found on the Spirometry Training Course website.
