Texas State University has named Brett Last its new associate vice president and chief human resources officer (CHRO).

Last, a seasoned professional with extensive experience across the academic, corporate and legal sectors, will lead the university’s human resources strategy. He starts his new position Sept. 1.

“Texas State’s commitment to improve the employee experience and be an employer of preference spoke directly to me as a human resources professional who is keenly focused on the role of people as the key ingredient in the development and fulfillment of institutional strategies,” Last said. “The vibrant culture of Texas State and the tremendous momentum surrounding the university’s future and aspirations are impressive, and I look forward to being a part of the community.”

Last’s career highlights include his current role as associate vice president and CHRO for Eastern Michigan University and his previous positions as CHRO at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and as executive director for human resources at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, Pa. Last earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of New Jersey and holds a juris doctorate from Rutgers School of Law. He has a background specializing in labor, employment and employee benefits law, complementing his robust experience in human resources. This provides him with a well-rounded perspective on key areas of people and culture including talent development, employee engagement and employee relations.

“We are confident that Mr. Last's leadership will continue to build on the rewarding employee experience that the university prides itself on and he will help to better position us as a national leader in employee retention and satisfaction,” said Eric Algoe, TXST executive vice president and CFO.
