The list is based on a school's use of renewable energy, their recycling and conservation programs, and the availability of environmental studies in academic offerings.

The Princeton Review has named Texas State University one of the nation’s top “Green Colleges” for its strong commitment to the environment and sustainability.

The Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges, 2025 Edition profiles 511 colleges. Apart from the top 50, Princeton Review does not rank the universities in numerical order.

The guide presents information on each school’s use of renewable energy, their recycling and conservation programs, the availability of environmental studies in academic offerings and career guidance for green jobs.

The Princeton Review chose the 511 colleges based on its 2023–2024 survey of administrators at nearly 600 colleges concerning their institutions’ sustainability-related policies, practices and programs. The company also surveyed students attending the colleges about their “green” campus experiences. The company’s editors analyzed more than 25 data points from the survey to tally “Green Rating” scores for the schools on a scale of 60 to 99. Colleges that earned a score of 80 or higher were chosen for the Guide to Green Colleges. Of the 511 schools selected for the guide, 460 are in the U.S., 31 in Canada, and the remaining 20 schools are in Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates.
