Cynthia Hernandez honored as NASPA Pillar of the Profession

Cynthia L. Hernandez, Ph.D., vice president for Student Success at Texas State University, has been honored as a 2025 NASPA Foundation Pillar of the Profession.
The award is given to professionals in higher education who have provided service to NASPA through leadership roles, created a lasting impact in the institutions where they’re employed, leaving a lasting-legacy of service, and demonstrated lifetime professional distinction in higher education.
“I am deeply honored to be named a 2025 NASPA Pillar of the Profession,” Hernandez said. “Throughout my career at Texas A&M University, Northern Arizona University, and now Texas State University, I have been blessed with incredible mentors, supportive colleagues, and invaluable opportunities. Being part of the NASPA community has been a privilege, as it is a space where student success is always at the forefront. NASPA’s commitment to advancing the work of student affairs and creating opportunities for continuous learning and growth is something for which I am truly grateful."
Honorees were nominated by NASPA members, colleagues, family members, or students. The nominator and a NASPA board member will partner to raise $3,500 in the Pillar’s honor.
Hernandez was nominated by Vicki Dobiyanski, associate vice president for Student Affairs at Texas A&M University. Dobiyanski collaborated with Victoria Black, assistant vice president for Student Success at TXST, to submit the nomination packet.
“It was an honor and privilege to nominate Dr. Hernandez for the 2025 class of the NASPA Pillars of the Profession,” Dobiyanski said. “I have known Dr. Hernandez for over 20 years as an advisor, mentor, colleague, and friend. She has made a profound impact on the Texas A&M University and Texas State University campuses, NASPA, NODA, and the community. Her dedication to excellence and success has always been at the forefront of all she does and her positive impact on the lives of students, staff, and the campus community has been felt by thousands.”
As vice president for Student Success, Hernandez provides leadership for a comprehensive division comprised of over 400 staff housed in 12 departments. With over 25 years of progressive leadership experience, she focuses on enhancing student success and learning in the co-curricular through inclusive, student-centered programs, services, and initiatives and communicating the impact and value of student success work.
