Henry Segerman, associate professor in the Department of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University, will present “Artistic Mathematics: Truth and Beauty” as part of the Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month Series at Texas State University on April 14.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held 1:30-3 p.m. in Derek Hall Room 113. This year’s theme is Mathematics and Reality.

Segerman is a mathematician and a mathematical artist whose presentations revolve around mathematical visualization: making accurate, effective and beautiful pictures, models and experiences of mathematical concepts. Examples in the medium of 3D printing will be shown and audience members will have an opportunity to inspect the physical objects. Some work in virtual reality and spherical video will be part of this presentation. Segerman will also share his experiences in teaching a project-based class on 3D printing.

The presentation will be followed by a public reception for Segerman where attendees will be able to visit with the guest speaker.

Organized by the Department of Mathematics at Texas State, the Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month Series presents annual events that explore interdisciplinary connections of mathematics. Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month is a program of the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics (JPBM) – a collaborative effort of the American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

“Artistic Mathematics: Truth and Beauty” is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Department of Mathematics, Texas Mathworks, Honors College and Common Experience.
