Spring 2022 issue of Hillviews available online

President Denise Trauth, who is retiring as president  after two decades in office, graces the cover. It is only the second time Dr. Trauth has been the face on the university’s magazine. The first was when she became president in 2002.

Throughout her 20 years at the helm the university has grown and changed — from Southwest Texas State University with 25,000 students, to Texas State University with campuses in San Marcos and Round Rock and an enrollment of more than 38,000. A timeline highlights the many transformations of TXST. While the “Letter from the President” has long been a staple of Hillviews, in this issue  Dr. Trauth answers questions as she looks back.

The College of Health Professions is marking its 50th anniversary. It all started in 1972 with an annual budget of $30,000 and an enrollment of 24 students. Today, there are 17 undergraduate and graduate programs and the St. David’s School of Nursing producing health professionals needed to serve a growing and aging population in the United States. ‘Connections’ profiles several Health Profession graduates who talk about their jobs with the Center for Disease Control, respiratory therapy, nursing, and running a hospital system — to name a few.  

Teacher training has always been at the heart of Texas State, which was founded as a teachers’ college. These days, the College of Education is addressing teacher preparation in a new way — with expanded student teaching and innovative preparation. Texas State has also developed new education degrees, scholarships, and is partnering with local school districts.

Live Oak Hall opens this fall. Students in the College of Fine Arts and Mass Communication will be sharing this $10 million facility. The facilities will serve students in Journalism and Mass Communication and those in Theatre's Film Production program.
