Miriam F. Williams, a professor of English and associate chair of the Department of English at Texas State University, has been honored with the Ken Rainey Award for Distinguished Research by the Society for Technical Communication.

The society presented the award to Williams during the Honors Reception at the STC Technical Communication Summit held May 14-17 in Atlanta.

The STC recognized Williams for her “exemplary leadership in the field of technical communication, demonstrating excellence in research methods, application of public policy, key scholarship on issues of race and ethnicity and promotion of research that not only ‘is good’ but also ‘does good’ throughout the field and society.”

The STC consider technical communication to include communication about technical or specialized topics, communication by using technology or communicating instructions about how to do something.

The Ken Rainey Award honors research that has made positive and significant contributions to technical communication practice and teaching. It can reward a lifetime of quality research in the field, a single high-quality empirical study or a set of related high-quality studies. It is named for Ken Rainey, who was a professor at Southern Polytechnic State University (now Kennesaw State University) and a STC Fellow who produced major research studies that continue to provide ongoing benefit to both practice and teaching in the field of technical communication.
