Wright was one of only two recipients formally presented with the British Empire Medal (BEM)  at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Washington, D.C.

Will Wright, a Texas State University Alumnus and chief creative officer for the Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF), was among four individuals recognized by His Majesty King Charles III in the Birthday Honours List 2024 and New Year’s Honours Lists 2024–25 for outstanding achievements and service to the United Kingdom.

Wright was one of only two recipients formally presented with the British Empire Medal (BEM) during an investiture ceremony at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 4.

“I’m deeply proud of my work with GHF, but even more so of being part of a long history of staff, volunteers and community who are part of the amazing work that the BEM acknowledges,” said Wright, who earned his MFA in communication design from TXST in 2022.

“The relationship with the British Consulate General Houston is an incredible example of diverse organizations working together to bridge communities. It’s such a privilege to receive this award.”

The British Consulate General Houston nominated Wright for work in strengthening relationships between the consulate and GHF through programs such as Tall Ships Galveston and Dickens on the Strand.

“Will’s recognition of the British Empire Medal highlights his creating meaningful connections between heritage, culture and the public,” said Dwayne Jones, GHF executive director. “We are proud to see his dedication honored on such a distinguished stage.”

The British Empire Medal is an honor awarded by the United Kingdom as part of the Order of the British Empire. It recognizes hands-on service to the community or outstanding achievement in local, grassroots, and charitable efforts. The BEM is often given to everyday citizens who make a tangible difference in their neighborhoods, workplaces, or organizations.

“Dickens on the Strand is a true jewel in Texas’s cultural calendar and is one of the largest and most vibrant celebrations of British culture anywhere in the United States,” said Consul General Keith Scott. “His vision has not only expanded the festival’s reach but also strengthened the cultural partnership between the U.K. and Texas. We are delighted to see his work honoured in this way.”

The importance of the BEM lies in its emphasis on community impact. It celebrates those whose dedication, generosity, and service significantly improve the lives of others, highlighting the value of civic spirit and personal commitment.
