Center for P-16 Initiatives helps students meet financial aid deadline

Texas State University students at the Center for P-16 Initiatives are helping high school seniors in Central Texas meet the new state financial aid priority application deadline of January 15, 2019.

Beginning with admission in the 2019-2020 academic year, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board moved the priority deadline for applying for state financial aid up from March 15 to January 15.

As part of the G-Force Mentoring Program, current Texas State students are working within area high schools, including San Marcos, Lockhart, Hays and Lehman high schools, to advise students on developing a timeline for completing their application materials, help students register to take the SAT and ACT exams, and teach students how to complete college application materials and financial aid forms, including the Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA).

Within the first month of the 2018-2019 school year, G-Force Mentors working with the college and career counselors at Lockhart High School had successfully met with all members of the current senior class to ascertain each student’s post-secondary goals. G-Force Mentors are now working one-on-one with students to ensure they take all of the necessary steps to successfully complete their college applications by the required deadlines.

The 2019-2020 FAFSA form opened on October 1, and can be found online at studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa.
