University Police Statements - Unsubstantiated Threats

Update to TXST community effective November 16, 4:45 p.m.

The following is an update to our TXST community regarding yesterday’s unsubstantiated threat to four buildings on the San Marcos Campus. TXST University Police monitored all four facilities last night, as well as the main campus, with no new findings to report. There continues to be no credible evidence of a threat. However out of an abundance of caution, UPD staff are posted at all four buildings, with additional patrols across campus. We understand this incident caused alarm in our community. Safety and security remain our top priorities. I’d like to thank the UPD officers as well as UT Austin Police, Austin Police, and the ATF Explosives Detection Canine Units who supported our response efforts yesterday and today. We will provide updates if the situation evolves. Making a threat of this magnitude is a serious offense and could be considered a felony. We continue to investigate who left the flyers on-campus. If you have any information that would aid in the investigation, please call UPD at 512-245-2805.

Update to TXST community effective November 15, 5:40 p.m.

The four buildings on the San Marcos Campus identified in this morning’s unsubstantiated threat have been searched extensively and no suspicious items or activities were found. At this point, there continues to be no credible evidence of a threat. However out of an abundance of caution, increased police presence will continue across campus including Strahan Arena, the site of tonight’s women’s basketball game. While not identified in the flyers found this morning, Strahan Arena was included in the campus search conducted by UPD with assistance from the UT Austin Police, Austin Police, and the ATF Explosives Detection Canine Units as an added precaution. Only the main entrance on the northeast side of Strahan Arena will be open for the game and bags will be checked. If you have any information related to the flyers found on the San Marcos Campus, please contact UPD by calling 512-245-2805.

Message to TXST community November 15,  approximately 12:08 p.m.

A stack of flyers was found in a building on the Texas State University San Marcos Campus this morning. The flyers contained unsubstantiated threats of possible explosions in four campus buildings over the next three days (Jowers, Theatre, Chemistry and Education Buildings). TXST University Police Department is sweeping the buildings and outlying areas. The buildings are not being evacuated and university activities continue as scheduled. TXST UPD is collaborating with several law enforcement agencies (including ATF, UT Austin Police Department, Homeland Security, and the FBI). At this time, no credible threat to campus has been identified. Out of an abundance of caution, however, there will be an increased police presence on-campus as the situation is being investigated. More information will be shared as it is available.

Please contact UPD directly with information related to this investigation: 512-245-2805
