The Academy provides a community for underrepresented identities

The Academy is a student-centered academic program housed in the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion (SDI) at Texas State University. Since the fall 2019 semester, the program has offered one-on-one peer and group academic support with a focus on STEM courses. The program is open to any Texas State student but highlights the importance of helping underrepresented identities. 

“We support our students in understanding that everyone that has been accepted to Texas State belongs here and sometimes it can be tough, but we can work together to make it through together,” said Dr. Toni Moreno, assistant director for Hispanic and First-Generation Student Retention. 

The Academy offers a place for students taking the same course to study together and get assistance from students who has already taken the course. 

“We have seen students’ confidence increase and the belief in their abilities to be global advocates for themselves and others. They are gaining these skills by fostering interpersonal relationships with each other. The students also build a sense of community and belonging – validating their identities in postsecondary education,” said Dr. Moreno.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Academy continues to be a resource for students online. Students may schedule appointments with Academy Scholars for support with coursework.
