New television studio planned for School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Faculty and staff in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University are working with university architects to develop a new state-of-the-art broadcast television studio, control room and media lab in what is now the Aqua Sports Center.  

The new television studio will be the future home of "Bobcat Update," an award-winning and campus-oriented newscast produced by students who major in electronic media. Sports and interview programs will also be produced in the new studio. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2020. 

"Having state-of-the-art facilities will only enhance our abilities to instruct students in field and studio production," said Tim England, electronic media program coordinator. "For 30 years, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication has rented studio space from Alkek Library to teach video production and television news courses. This new studio, control room and media lab will help ensure that we maintain our stature as a professionally accredited program."  

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.  

The $10 million Aqua Sports Center project, approved in August by the Texas State University System Board of Regents, will remove the swimming pool and convert the Aqua Sports building into a film and television complex for the Department of Theatre and Dance and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The renovated facility will provide space for courses in film, television news, video production, sound technologies and sports media.
