Bobcats Give Back Expands from University to the Community
City of San Marcos, Lauren Volpe | June 7, 2019
In an effort to improve the appearance of neighborhoods, and decrease the number of items going into a landfill, the City of San Marcos Neighborhood Enhancement Department and Texas State University will be expanding the Bobcats Give Back program to provide additional locations for student donations.
The project was initially launched in May on the Texas State University Campus where students were able to drop off clothing and other items to be donated during the move-out season. In July, the program will expand to thirteen apartment complexes and one residential neighborhood.
“We are looking forward to seeing the positive impact of Bobcats Give Back,” said San Marcos Resource Recovery Program Coordinator Heather Wooten. “During the pilot launch on campus, we collected 735 pounds of clothing and personal care items. By encouraging students to donate unwanted goods, we hope to keep valuable resources out of the landfill, benefit our local organizations, and alleviate garbage related issues during the move-out turn in July.”
The program accepts non-perishable food, clothing, small appliances, soaps, and pet supplies. Students can also donate furniture at the residential site. Mattresses, couches, upholstered or damaged furniture will not be accepted. For a detailed list and examples please visit www.sanmarcostx.gov/bobcatsgiveback.
Donations will benefit local organizations including Goodwill, Greater San Marcos Youth Council, Green Guy Recycling, Habitat ReStore, Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center, Hays County Food Bank, JOSCO Products, Redwood Community Center, and the San Marcos Animal Shelter.
Participating apartment complexes
Donations will be collected July 8 to August 2 at participating apartment complexes: Cabana Beach, Copper Beech, Elevation on Post, Grove San Marcos, Hillside Ranch, Iconic Village, River Oaks Villas, Savannah Club, Treehouse, University Club, Uptown Square, Vie Lofts, and Westfield.
Residential site
The team will operate a Friday-Saturday drop-off site on Craddock Avenue between Sonora and Sagewood Trail July 12-13, July 19-20, and July 26-27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Look for the Resource Recovery pop-up tent.
