Colegrove honored with The Council on Anthropology and Education's 2021 Outstanding Book Award

Kiyomi Sánchez-Suzuki Colegrove, assistant professor of bilingual/bicultural education at Texas State University, and co-author Jennifer Keys Adair, associate professor of curriculum and instruction at The University of Texas at Austin, have been selected for The Council on Anthropology and Education’s (CAE) 2021 Outstanding Book Award.

The book titled, Segregation by Experience: Agency, Racism and Learning in the Early Grades was nominated to the CAE Outstanding Book Award along with various other CAE qualified books across the nation.

The CAE Outstanding Book Award committee recognizes books that are “new, critical, and cutting-edge” and contribute to the anthropology of education.

The book is summarized as a glimpse into early childhood experiences and how learning environment expectations for children of color can deny them the same chances as their white peers.

After reviewing numerous nominations and contemplation, Segregation by Experience: Agency, Racism and Learning in the Early Grades was selected due to its impressive ethnographic work in an early elementary classroom and including how each person contributes to a classroom’s environment. The committee also highly appreciated the chance to read the children’s perspectives and the book's explanation of segregation in classrooms, which motivates readers to question education policies.

Colegrove and Adair were formally recognized for the award on Nov. 19 at the ​​CAE Past President’s Distinguished Lecture and Awards Recognition ceremony.
