NCAA and Sun Belt Conference Faculty Athletics Representative Announced
Dr. Michelle Hamilton has been selected to serve as Texas State University’s NCAA Division I and Sun Belt Conference Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) beginning June 1, 2020.
Dr. Hamilton is replacing Dr. Vicki Britain, Professor of Political Science, who has served the Texas State Athletics Program with great integrity and passion since 2018. In her capacity as FAR, Dr. Hamilton will provide oversight of the academic integrity of the Texas State Athletics Program and serve as an advocate for student-athlete well-being.
The FAR’s role is to ensure the proper balance between academics and intercollegiate athletics on the Texas State Campuses. The FAR is involved in providing oversight of athletics programs and compliance with NCAA, conference, and institutional rules; ensuring academic integrity; and promoting the well-being of student athletes. In discharging these responsibilities, the FAR interacts regularly with the Director of Athletics (AD), Executive Senior Associate ADs, the Senior Woman Administrator, the Director of Compliance, the Athletics Certification Officer, and the Director of the Athletic Academic Center, including the Center’s Student Development Specialists. Additionally, the FAR serves as chair of the Athletic Advising Council.
Dr. Hamilton joined the Texas State faculty in 2001 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance after three-year stints at the University of Houston and then at the University of North Texas. She was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2004 and promoted to Professor in 2017. She served as Teacher Education Coordinator and as Director for Center for P-16 Initiatives. During 2007-2008, she served as Presidential Fellow -- a President’s Cabinet-level position at Texas State.
Dr. Hamilton holds a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation and youth leadership from Michigan State University, a Master of Arts degree in adapted physical education from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D. in physical education and exercise science from Michigan State University.
Dr. Hamilton has been an active scholar whose works include many articles, conference papers and workshops, and textbook chapters. She has served on a wide range of university committees.
