Professor Joey Fauerso awarded $25,000 Joan Mitchell grant

Joey Fauerso, professor in the School of Art and Design, has received a $25,000 grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation for Painters and Sculptors.

The foundation, based out of New York City, works to bring awareness to abstract artist Joan Mitchell’s life while providing opportunities to aspiring artists. Every year, the foundation awards 25 artists with $25,000 each in unrestricted funds through its Painters & Sculptors Grants, which were first established 27 years ago to enhance the lives and careers of artists.

Fauerso’s work is primarily centered around painting, video, installation, and performance that addresses issues of gender, humor, and family. Her work has been featured in several exhibitions at galleries including MASSMoCA, the Drawing Center in New York, and New Mexico State University Art Museum. She credits her upbringing in a Transcendental Meditation community in Iowa as a source of inspiration for her work, along with how gender is expressed in Western art, and her experiences as a parent.
