Dr. Rodney E. Rohde, professor and chair of the Texas State University Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) Program and Associate Director for the Translational Health Research Big Idea, has recently been featured in multiple international, national and regional publications that highlight his expertise regarding the global impact of the SARSCoV2 Coronavirus (COVID-19). Rohde is a credentialed specialist in virology, microbiology and molecular diagnostics, and has nearly 30 years of experience as a hybrid professional in public health and medical laboratory science. His research interests focus on, public health microbiology (rabies), healthcare associated infections and antibiotic resistant bacteria (MRSA), as well as infection prevention and science communication efforts. Rohde also serves as associate dean for research for the College of Health Professions.
As Dr. Rohde has shared in several interviews, “Viruses are going to virus.” Dr. Rohde has stated that humankind has rarely, if ever, controlled or contained a virus outbreak with the exception of smallpox. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in people and many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, and now with this new virus (named SARS-CoV-2). Dr. Rohde stresses that this is a rapidly unfolding event and it is critical that we monitor reputable sources - the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization - and follow common precautions including hand washing and other measures.
