Students volunteered to help 746 people register to vote on the registration deadline day
Yvonne Rhodes | October 9, 2020
On October 5, the last day to register to vote in Texas, Texas State University students and staff worked together to register 746 people to vote through the combined efforts of a drive-thru registration event at Strahan Arena at the University Events Center, and student volunteers dispersed across the San Marcos Campus.
Dozens of university students, student-athletes, cheerleaders and Boko volunteered at the drive-thru registration event. While adhering to COVID safety protocols and practicing social distancing, students registered people to vote through their car windows. The event was sponsored by TXST Athletics, Texas State Voter Friendly Campus Team, Move Texas, Texas Rising, Young Conservatives of Texas State, and College Democrats.
The events were part of a larger strategy to prepare the Bobcat community for election season and increase civic engagement and voter turnout.
Texas State University President Denise M. Trauth formed an Election Task Force over the summer, comprised of 25 faculty, staff and students. Chairing the group is Dr. Sherri Benn, assistant vice president for Institutional Inclusive Excellence for Student Initiatives. Learn more about the task force’s goals, and their phased plan for community engagement throughout election season.
