Mathworks celebrates 30 years at Texas State

Mathworks, a nationally recognized program of excellence and innovation in mathematics, is celebrating 30 years at Texas State University. 

Founded in 1990 by Dr. Max Warshauer, a Regents Professor of Mathematics, the first Texas State Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC) hosted 12 high school students and four Texas State graduate students. The program has expanded — thanks to founding faculty members Dr. Terry McCabe, Dr. Don Hazlewood, Dr. Eugene Curtin, and Dr. Hiroko Warshauer — to include professional development for teachers, camps for middle school students, and curriculum development.

 During its three decades, the program has reached more than 8,000 students and 700 teachers. It also has earned multiple awards, including the Siemens Foundation Founder’s Award, the Texas Higher Education Star Award, and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.      

  Mathworks will mark the anniversary with a special three-day event July 5 to 7 that will include alumni panel talks, a banquet, networking events, and a river excursion. Warshauer said donations will be accepted for the events held at the Embassy Suites in San Marcos. For students and counselors attending HSMC 2019, all events are free. 

“We will be bringing alumni and guests together to renew old friendships and ties, as well as to raise money for scholarships,” Warshauer said.
