Expert and author to speak on Constitution Day

Keith E. Whittington, author and the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Politics at Princeton University, will deliver a lecture on September 20, at Texas State University as part of the Constitution Day observance.   

Titled “Why We Should Value Campus Free Speech” the lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Alkek Library Teaching Theatre, Room 250. The public is invited to attend. 

The  Constitution Day event is sponsored by the Texas State Department of Political Science, and co-sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and the Jack C. Miller Center for Teaching America’s Founding Principles and History.  Additionally, Whittington will lead a seminar on September 21 for students and faculty.

Whittington is the author of the book “Speak Freely: Why Universities Must Defend Free Speech.” He has published widely on American constitutional theory and development, federalism, judicial politics, and the presidency. 

Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787.  A law establishing the observance of Constitution Day was created in 2004.
