Research!America president to keynote Health Scholar Showcase

SAN MARCOS – Mary Woolley, president of Research!America, will be the keynote speaker at Texas State University’s 2018 Health Scholar Showcase on February 23.

The showcase will be held at the Texas State Performing Arts Center at 2 p.m. Other speakers will include William Buster, executive vice president of community investment at St. David's Foundation, and Suzanne Anderson, the interim CEO and president of Special Olympics Texas.

In addition to serving as president of Research!America, the nation’s largest nonprofit alliance working to make research to improve health a higher national priority, Woolley has served as president of the Association of Independent Research Institutes, as editor of the Journal of the Society of Research Administrators and as reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation. Woolley has a 30-year history of science advocacy and research-related topics.

The Health Scholar Showcase is intended to foster dialog and networking among Texas State faculty. Currently, Texas State has faculty representing more than 30 departments, schools, and centers and at least eight colleges engaged in health-related research and sponsored programs activities. The theme of this year’s showcase is “Promoting Community Health,” which is intended to promote applied research on social, economic, political, environmental, nutritional, technological, educational and healthcare issues that combine to affect the health of individuals and communities. The event will include a panel discussion on national and regional health research trends, an interactive poster session showcasing Texas State research on social determinants of health and a networking reception for faculty and community partners. Up to three posters presented at the showcase will be awarded up to $5,000 each to extend, expand or seek external funding for the research.

The event is hosted by the Translational Health Research Initiative. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the Office of the Provost provided support. The event is only open to faculty and representatives of community partner organizations who work on health issues.
