Texas State University faculty members from a wide array of disciplines will participate in CoSearch competition September 15-16 at the Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Park.
The 2017 CoSearch Weekend, an intensive pitch competition, is designed to bring researchers, visionaries, advocates and artists together to address pressing societal problems via new and never-before-considered cross-disciplinary approaches.
Over the two-day event, participants will debate and identify persistent social, economic and even political problems, then form teams from diverse disciplinary backgrounds to develop a plan of research on their chosen issues. The teams will shape their research proposals and then pitch them to a panel of judges.
“I am amazed by how much talent our faculty and community members have but we don’t always get to see it,” said CoSearch co-chair Michael Burns, Department of Communication Studies. “CoSearch allows campus and community members to see what is possible and hopefully build lasting relationships to help solve community problems while advancing research.”
The 2016 winning pitch, “The Living Room,” proposed the development of a mobile app to match under-utilized spaces in homes, churches, company conference rooms, community centers and public places with performance artists and groups in need of rehearsal venues.
The 2017 CoSearch competition will be facilitated by Greg Tehven, a curator with TEDx and workshop leader. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., Saturday, September 16 in the Texas State Performing Arts Center. A reception will follow.
