Award-winning opera star Stephanie Blythe to perform at Texas State

Mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe, once described as having a “once-in-a-generation” voice, will give a performance at Texas State University Thursday, April 13.

The concert, part of the University Arts Series, will be at 7:30 p.m. in Evans Auditorium. Admission is free for Texas State students and $8 for the general public. Tickets are available at txstatepresents.com.

Blythe will be accompanied by pianist Craig Terry. She recently released her first crossover recording on the Innova label with Terry, titled As Long as There Are Songs.

During her 20-plus-year career, Blythe has sung the most demanding roles in the world’s greatest opera houses. She has performed with the Metropolitan Opera in New York more than 200 times, including productions of Wagner’s monumental Ring cycle. Blythe was named Musical America's Vocalist of the Year in 2009, received an Opera News Award in 2007 and won the Tucker Award in 1999.

“A big sound is created with many different things working together,” Blythe told the San Diego Union-Tribune in 2014. “But basically it’s the resonating space in your body, the resonating space of the room, how clearly the vowel is sounded, and how well you spin the tone. That’s it. That’s all it is.”
