Latin Music Studies at Texas State University will host the 18th annual Feria del Mariachi festival on Saturday, May 6.
The festival concludes with a public concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. There will also be a mariachi competition, beginning at 9 a.m., and a matinee concert at 4 p.m. for schools participating in the competition.
This year’s festival celebrates the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Mariachi Nueva Generación, Texas State’s mariachi band. In honor of the milestone, the performances will include some of the band’s distinguished alumni. Celeste Curiel, Celeste Rios and Karen Zavala, all of whom have won the “Best in the U.S.” prize at Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza, will join the current iteration of the Mariachi Nueva Generación for the concerts. The winners of the middle school and high school competitions will also perform.
Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert are available at www.txstatepresents.com. The cost is $18, including a processing fee, and does not include admission to the competition or the matinee performance.
Feria del Mariachi seeks to promote mariachi education and culture in schools and the community by exposing students to successful figures in the mariachi community and providing them a chance to meet other young musicians.
