Julie Nathanielsz, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas State University, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct a research project “Place Making Body/Body Making Place” at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Solo, Java.

Nathanielsz will look at the role of movement culture—particularly dance and movement in daily life—in the evocation of place in Indonesia.

“Specifically, the project is designed to engage creative physical practices that connect human nature with nature at-large, practices that recognize and serve the need for connection to--while also underscoring one’s agency in creating--a sense of identity and belonging to personal, cultural and familial place,” said Nathanielsz.

The Fulbright program is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars and is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. It is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
