In Brief: Bobcat Blend named Compost Program of Year by USCC

Texas State University’s Bobcat Blend composting program has been selected by the United States Composting Council (USCC) for its 2015 Compost Program of the Year Award.

Bobcat Blend is a student-run operation under the Department of Agriculture, creating compost using food waste from campus dining halls and invasive plant species from the San Marcos River. In 2009, the organization set up an off-campus composting site to distribute the compost to the San Marcos community.

Each year, the USCC gives its award to a successful small-scale composting program that serves the community through education and outreach. Bobcat Blend offers lectures and tours to inform others about the composting process and provides volunteer opportunities for community members wishing to know more. Displays have been set up displays on campus to educate the university community about composting and recycling efforts.

Texas State professor of horticulture Tina Marie Cade has been invited to receive the award in January at the USCC Annual Conference in Jacksonville, Florida. Cade manages the Bobcat Blend program along with the floral sales program, Bobcat Bloom, and is involved with various other campus organizations.
