Paramedic students from EMTS Academy and St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center Paramedic Program will participate in training during the Airway Rodeo August 15 at Texas State University’s Round Rock Campus.

The specialized emergency airway procedures training is a collaboration among the St. David’s School of Nursing at Texas State, EMTS Academy and St. David’s paramedic program.

The collaboration will use the nursing school’s simulation lab. The lab’s high-fidelity manikins have the ability to talk, simulate breathing and can have advanced airway procedures performed. The paramedic students will have support from other EMS students to make the simulations progress as true to reality as possible.

This is the third year that the nursing school and EMTS Academy have collaborated to hold the simulation lab day.

“The best way to learn is to actually do it,” said Matt Nealand, EMS program director at EMTS. “The second best way is to simulate it.  Working with the school of nursing simulation lab allows us to create realistic critical airway training for our paramedic students and prepares them for their internship.”

The St. David’s School of Nursing, opened in August of 2010, educates bachelor’s of science in nursing students and master’s in nursing family nurse practitioner students. The EMTS Academy and Round Rock medical paramedic program trains paramedics at Texas State’s Round Rock campus.

Prior events included a disaster drill utilizing nursing and EMS students from both programs.
