International Concert Series presents gamelan, music faculty showcase

The School of Music International Concert Series at Texas State University will present the music faculty showcase and Balinese gamelan on Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

The event is open to the public and is held at the Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students. Tickets can be purchased at www.txstatepresents.com. Seating will be on a reserved basis.

The event will begin with a pre-concert performance in the lobby by Texas State’s Gamelan Lipi Awan, followed by the showcase, which features world-class instrumental artists of Texas State faculty. 

Faculty artists include: Adah Toland Jones, flute; Paula Bird, violin; Ames Asbell, viola; Todd Oxford, saxophone; Vanguel Tangarov and Stephen Girko, clarinet; and Alena Gorina, Faith DeBow, Michael Ippolito and guest artists Ekaterina Tangarova, piano.

Gamelan is the music of Indonesia, which centers on a specially constructed and elaborate set of gong and metal-keyed percussion instruments. These instruments are tuned to an entirely different scale unfamiliar to Western ears. Texas State’s gamelan was handmade in Bali and received in 2012.

Gamelan Lipi Awan is a volunteer organization of students and faculty on campus and is led by music faculty member Gordon Jones.
