The McCoy College Bobcat Net Impact chapter at Texas State University has been awarded the prestigious gold standing for 2014 by Net Impact.
These standings, based on the chapter’s performance this past academic year, represent the most outstanding chapters in the Net Impact network. This year, just 16 percent of more than 300 Net Impact chapters worldwide achieved Gold standing.
The McCoy College chapter's activities this year were led by Presidents Christopher Gonzalez and Samuel Long and included co-hosting a campus-wide Roundtable 360⁰ focused on "Mental Health: It’s Good for Business"; launching national sustainability program Awake Aware America focused on STEM technology; and working in resource recovery and data collection at Circuit of the Americas during Formula 1, Moto GP and at SXSW.
"Taking initiative shows the company not only that you can handle what has been assigned, but also that your chapter is prepared to tackle more challenging projects in the future," Long said. "While working at SXSW ECO, the McCoy College chapter’s desire to go above and beyond helped them reach a 97 percent landfill diversion rate. Rather than just functioning as waste monitoring volunteers, we made a massive impact on the overall sustainability of the event."
The McCoy College chapter is already planning event participation for the coming year. The next event, ESPN Summer X GAMES 2014, is taking place June 6-8 at Circuit of the Americas.
"The 2014 Gold and Silver chapters are true leaders on campus and in their communities," said Net Impact CEO Liz Maw. "They are empowering their peers to create positive social and environmental change every day and leading the way to a more sustainable future."
Chapters achieve gold standing by meeting a rigorous set of requirements based on their activities, programming, membership reach and network contribution. This year, the Net Impact network provided more than 2,477 local events worldwide and over 144 programs that allow members to positively impact their communities, of which gold chapters contributed 968 events and 70 programs. Gold chapters also strengthened the overall network through regional collaboration, mentoring other chapters, and sharing successful ideas with their peers.
