The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) at Texas State University is sponsoring its fourth Youth Preparedness Camp beginning Monday, June 23. The camp offers a select group of young people a chance to learn emergency preparedness skills and receive Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) certification, as well as training in youth leadership.
More than three dozen youngsters from across the state and their adult sponsors will spend five days on the Texas State campus earning basic CERT certification, including planning and leadership skills as they relate to emergency preparedness in schools and communities.
Campers also will participate in a mock disaster exercise in which they will use both classroom and hands-on instruction to address a realistic emergency scenario. The camp is a valuable part of the Texas School Safety Center’s (TxSSC) goal of keeping Texas schools and communities safe and secure. “The challenge we all share is to engage and empower our youth to become prepared citizens and to help them build the skills to engage their families, their peers and the communities in disaster readiness,” said Victoria Calder, TxSSC director.
