In brief: Texas State students honored for storm drain designs

Texas State University students Andrea Weissenbuehler and Mabel Sirup were presented with medallions depicting their winning designs for a manhole cover art contest co-sponsored by the university and the City of San Marcos.

The bronze medallions were presented July 11 at the foundry in the Mitte Building on campus where they were cast.

The students entered the contest separately, but organizers ultimately decided to combine the two into a single, unified design. Weissenbuehler, a MFA student in communication design from Austin, entered the San Marcos Salamander illustration that makes up the center of the design. Sirup, a senior studio art major, created the border frame depicting waves, fish and turtles.

The design will be cast in steel on all new storm drain covers installed throughout the city and university campus. The design will remind members of the community that all storm drains lead directly to the ecologically sensitive San Marcos River.
