A bomb threat on the Texas State University campus that prompted the evacuation of a residence hall was resolved safely early Tuesday morning, Jan. 14, after the Austin Bomb Squad detonated a suspicious package as a precautionary measure.
Approximately 300 students evacuated from College Inn residence hall at 1:42 a.m. to the Student Recreation Center were allowed to return to their rooms at 6 a.m. once the Austin Bomb Squad gave the all-clear.
The incident began shortly after 12:30 a.m. when a University Police officer on patrol spotted an individual smoking near the LBJ Student Center in violation of the university's smoke-free campus policy. The individual fled on foot but was quickly taken into custody. An inspection of the subject's vehicle revealed what appeared to potentially be an explosive device with an ignition mechanism attached.
The Austin Bomb Squad was called in and arrived at 3 a.m. By 4 a.m. the bomb squad had determined the device was not explosive, but had discovered another suspicious package in the vehicle. After X-rays proved inconclusive, the package was detonated by the bomb squad at 5:46 a.m. as a precautionary measure.
Texas State has resumed regular operations. All classes will be held as normal.
