Jose de Jesus Garcia-Cuellar named Hogg Foundation Bilingual Scholar

Texas State University graduate student Jose De Jesus Garcia-Cuellar was recently named a Hogg Foundation Bilingual Scholar and received a $10,000 grant for his outstanding work in the field of mental health services.

The Hogg Foundation was established in 1940 by the children of former Texas Gov. James S. Hogg and provides funding necessary for the advancement of services, administration, research and education in mental health.

Garcia-Cuellar’s studies aim to break down the long–standing language barriers that deter many Spanish-speaking Texans from seeking mental services health and enrolling in counseling and rehabilitation programs. His pursuits come at a particularly important time, coinciding with the recent publication of an updated Diagnostic Statistical Manual, which mental health professionals use to relay diagnoses information to clients.

Dorinda Noble, Catherine Hawkins and Steve Medel of the Texas State School of Social Work nominated Garcia-Cuellar for the award, citing his academic dedication and generosity as important displays of character.

Garcia-Cuellar will travel to Dallas on Oct. 31- Nov. 3 to attend the Council on Social Work Education Annual Program Meeting. The conference will provide him with the opportunity to gain valuable experience and knowledge as he prepares for a career in mental health services.
