The Center for P-16 Initiatives will host its 4th annual Summer College Access Project (CAP) Camp on the Texas State University campus June 10-20.
The CAP Camp is a summer boot-camp for high school juniors and seniors dedicated to college access and success. The camp for incoming juniors is one week in duration, and the camp for incoming seniors is two weeks.
CAP Camp participants will gain an understanding of college applications, financial aid, admission essay topics, SAT/ACT preparation, life as a college freshman, and a variety of academic and professional aspects to help them prepare for life after high school.
Participants will also grow in knowledge and confidence in order to complete the required steps to gain acceptance into the college or university of their choice.
CAP Camp coordinator Haleigh Winfrey has worked on the camp for the past two summers, and said the intent of the camp is to, “build motivation in the students so they can develop a plan for their post-secondary education.
“We want to show them that the college-going process can be done in clear, specific steps, and that anybody can go to college,” said Winfrey.
“I really enjoyed it. It opened my eyes about college life at Texas State, and about the opportunities I have with FAFSA,” said San Marcos high school senior Valerie Casso attended the CAP Camp last summer.
Lewis Bowden will be attending the CAP Camp for his second summer. Bowden is a senior at the Katherine Anne Porter charter school.
“I loved it. There are too many words to describe it," Bowden said. "Everyone is from different backgrounds, but here to learn the same stuff.”
The camp is free, but space is limited to a total of 20 juniors and 20 seniors on a first-come, first-served basis. The C.A.P. Camp for juniors will run June 10-14, and the seniors camp will run June 10-20.
