School of Music's Art Song Symposium to feature Laura Claycomb

Texas State University-San Marcos School of Music will host the 2nd annual Art Song Symposium Sept. 25, 28 and 29, featuring opera coloratura soprano Laura Claycomb.

The symposium will begin Sept. 25 with a lecture recital entitled “The Parisian Salon” at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Building Recital Hall. Selected French vocal and instrumental music will be presented by academic and performing music faculty in the style of a 19th century Parisian salon party. Tickets for the event are $10 for general admission and $5 for students, senior citizens and military members with identification.

The guest artist recital featuring Claycomb and Keith Weber on piano will take place Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center of San Marcos High School. The recital will include art songs by Messiaen, Poulenc, Hindemith, Tres Poemas, Chant de terre et de ciel, Fiançailles pour rire, Marienleben and Brentano Lieder. Tickets for the event are $12 for general admission and $6 for students, senior citizens and military members with identification.

Claycomb and Weber return for a master class on Sept. 29 to conclude the symposium from 10 a.m.-1 p.m at the Performing Arts Center of San Marcos High School. The final master class is free and open to the public.

All tickets for all events will be sold at the door.

Claycomb is known for her ethereal high notes, impeccable musicianship and dramatic stage presence. Claycomb appears regularly with the Paris Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera, the London Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, Le Concert d'Astrée and the Cleveland Orchestra.
