The Supple Folk Music series at Texas State University will welcome Grammy Award-winning master acoustic guitarist Doug Smith Oct. 24 as part of the Encore Performing Arts Series.
The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Price Seniors Center, located at 222 W. San Antonio St. in San Marcos.
Smith is a nationally recognized acoustic guitarist, known for weaving together folk, classical, jazz and contemporary music forms into a unique, fingerpicking style that recalls the playing of Chet Atkins, Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges and Alex de Grassi.
His original music has been heard on radio and in TV shows throughout the world, including “True Hollywood Story” and “Martha Stewart Living,” and his playing style has been heard in movies such as “Twister,” “Moll Flanders” and “August Rush.”
Reserved seating for the event is $25, and general seating is $15. Seating is limited to 100. Ticket prices include a wine and cheese reception, as well as an artist meet-and-greet from 7-7:30 p.m.
The Supple Folk Music series, part of the Encore Performing Arts Series, was launched in 2003 by the late Texas State University President Jerry Supple and his wife Cathy, driven by their passion for the traditional American art form. Over the past decade, the Supples’ connections within the folk music community have allowed them to bring some of the very best artists to Texas State’s performance venues. The program brings award-winning world-class performers to the campus, providing students, faculty, staff and community members with an intimate performing arts experience without having to leave San Marcos.
