Texas State, area communities prepare to celebrate GenTX Day

The Center for P-16 Initiatives at Texas State University-San Marcos will celebrate Generation Texas Day on Friday, May 4, the culmination of GenTX Week starting April 27.

On May 4, the students of GenTX and their plans for the future will be celebrated with special recognition of the graduating class of 2012. Resolutions will be offered at the Texas Capitol, and mayors in communities such as Houston, San Antonio, the Rio Grande Valley, Fort Worth and El Paso will issue official proclamations encouraging their communities to show their support for the students of GenTX. All Texans are asked to join the movement that day by wearing their favorite college t-shirt. High schools all over the state will have GenTX Day pep rallies, and college-bound students will be showcased on senior spotlight posters displayed throughout the schools. Everyone in the community will be encouraged to share their own stories of education and personally promote awareness within their community of the importance of higher education.

In partnership with the E3 Alliance, the Center for P-16 Initiatives is establishing a college-going culture throughout Central Texas. Under the direction of Michelle Hamilton, the center is focused on increasing college access for all Texans, especially groups who have been historically underrepresented in higher education.

“We recognize how crucial it is to not only teach and train our families in Central Texas to begin preparing for their kids’ college educations at a very young age, but also to show solidarity with the rest of the state by wearing our college t-shirts on GenTX Day as a symbol of our commitment to closing the statewide achievement gaps,” said Isaac Torres of the Center for P-16 Initiatives.
