Butler honored by Association of American Geographers

David R. Butler, Texas State University-San Marcos Regents’ Professor of Geography, was recently awarded the Melvin G. Marcus Distinguished Career Award from the Geomorphology Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers at the annual meeting in February.

The Geomorphology Specialty Group is a subset of the Association of American Geographers and members’ research specialty is geomorphology, the study of landforms and land forming processes.

The Melvin G. Marcus Award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to geomorphology during his career. The nomination process includes a complete consideration of the candidate’s contribution to geomorphology, biographic sketch, bibliography and three letters of support from colleagues.

Butler has published and contributed to multiple books including Zoogeomorphology: Animals as Geomorphic Agents, Mountain Geomorphology--Integrating Earth Systems and Geography in America at the Dawn of the 21st Century. He has also published more than 100 journal articles, some co-authored with his students.

Butler is current chairman of the Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium Series Steering Committee and archivist of the Geomorphology Specialty Group. Butler has been with Texas State since 1997 and was honored as a Regent Professor by the Board of Regents in 2010.
