U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett has announced that $456,387 in federal funds is available for Texas State University under the Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program.
Texas State will use these funds to improve academic achievement and student retention through mentoring to first-year students. Texas State will also provide comprehensive financial education to help students better understand available options to finance their college education.
“Texas State University’s designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution is a recognition of the important role the university plays in educating Texas students from diverse backgrounds,” said Doggett. “This well-deserved award will help ensure that students beginning their higher education at Texas State are given every opportunity for success.”
“We are grateful to the Department of Education and all of our congressional supporters for this funding,” said Texas State President Denise Trauth. “We recognize the importance of improving persistence rates among our incoming students and this initiative bolsters our efforts through Texas State’s new Personalized Academic and Career Exploration Center, which aims to improve the academic advising process for our first-year students.”
“This grant program will help more Latino students have access to quality higher education, which is key to building a highly skilled workforce to compete in a global marketplace,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
