Texas State University-San Marcos Department of English will take part in the 23rd annual National African American Read-In on Feb. 21.
The event will take place at the Brasher Reading Room in Flowers Hall room 302 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and will be hosted by Elvin Holt, professor of English. Anyone is welcome to attend and bring materials of their own to read, but there will also be some reading materials available.
The National African American Read-In is sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English each year during Black History Month. The organization urges schools, churches, libraries, bookstores, community organizations and interested citizens to make literacy a significant part of February by hosting and coordinating read-ins in their communities.
The Read-In has been endorsed by the International Reading Association. More than a million readers of all ethnic groups from the United States, the District of Columbia, the West Indies, African countries and more have participated in the event. The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities.
