Texas State celebrates 24th Annual Communication Week

Peter Bay, conductor and artistic director of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Stephen Smith, founder of the national communication honorary society Lambda Pi Eta, and outstanding alum Wendy Atkins-Sayre are headline speakers at the 24th annual Communication Week to be held at Texas State University-San Marcos Feb. 27-March 2.

This annual showcase event brings nationally and internationally known speakers to the Texas State campus for a free series of lectures, seminars and workshops, most of which will be in Centennial Hall.

Management consultant Brad Closson presents a special session “Connective Networking” at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 in Centennial Hall room 103.

“It’s a rich array of lectures and events that display applications of a variety of communication topics and contexts,” said Steven Beebe, chair of the communication studies department. “We are delighted to offer these lectures as a gift to the campus and community.”

The spotlight event, “How Does Music Communicate Emotion?” features Bay along with Ian Davidson and Gordon Jones, distinguished composers and performers, will be held in the School of Music Building recital hall at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27. A reception will follow hosted by the Friends of Fine Arts and Communication Board.

Other lecture topics include visual rhetoric, rhetoric and fear, nonverbal communication through the eyes of a professional photographer, and several programs that focus on career tips and strategies. The culmination of the week is the Communication Studies Convocation in Centennial Hall room GO2 which features awards to outstanding faculty and the convocation address “The Conversation” presented by Stephen Smith.
