Center for Migrant Education hosts 2012 Leadership Conference

The Center for Migrant Education, under the College of Applied Arts at Texas State University-San Marcos, presents the 2012 Migrant Leadership Academy Conference on May 1 at the LBJ Student Center on campus.

The conference will take place from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and will feature student sessions, parent sessions, campus tours, panels and door prizes throughout the day. Student sessions will include a presentation by Texas State Career Services and information about how to manage middle school years for transition into high school and college. Parent sessions will address challenges parents face in preparing children for college and the psychology of adolescents.

Guest speakers at the conference will include Jaime Chahin, dean of the College of Applied Arts, Arlene Hooper with Owen Goodnight Middle School, R. Stephen Medel with the School of Social Work, Israel Najera with the Texas State Counseling Center and former Texas State CAMP students.

Visiting school districts to the conference will be Brackett, Carrizo Springs, Edgewood, Floresville, Harlandale, Hondo, La Pryor, South Side, Medina Valley, Northside ISD, Poteet and Southwest ISD.

In partnership with the United States Department of Education’s Office of Migrant Education (OME), the Center for Migrant Education at Texas State supports and improves interstate and intrastate coordination of activities, programs, and agencies concerned with the education, health and welfare of migrant children.
