Texas State unveils slate of events in observance of 2012 Earth Day

The Environmental Conservation Organization of the Geography Department at Texas State University-San Marcos will host an Earth Day Celebration on the Quad April 18. Following this, a “Bike to School Day” will be held on April 19.

The event will feature exhibits by a variety of different sustainability-oriented non-profit companies, businesses and agencies, as well as student and community organizations. Exhibitors will offer an array of educational interactive displays including a portable energy-generating solar panel and solar-powered vehicles.

The Texas State Water Aid Chapter will also host a Denim Drive on the Quad. The Denim Drive is a call to action to donate old denim and give it “new life” by converting it into home insulation. The insulation will later be donated to Habitat for Humanity.

During the evening, there will be two documentary screenings held in Evans Liberal Arts, Room 114 on campus.

At 5 p.m., the award-winning “Switch” documentary will focus on our nation’s energy future with regard to renewable energy and fossil fuels. The 7 p.m. documentary, “Bag It" investigates the effects of plastic waste and ways it can be reduced through local action.

The “Bike to School Day” event will be held the following day, April 19. The event encourages the Texas State community to ride a bicycle to class or work that day. There will be additionally activities on the Quad from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

These events are free and open to the public. Parking is available in the LBJ student center garage.
